CCIA Europe Urges EU Lawmakers to Reject Asymmetric AI Regulation
CCIA Europe warns EU negotiators against targeting foundation models with asymmetric obligations ahead of the next AI Act trilogue, arguing that such rules ignore actual risk and will quickly become outdated.
CCIA Europe sends a formal letter to the Spanish Presidency and European Parliament negotiators ahead of the upcoming AI Act trilogue. The tech group urges co-legislators to avoid undermining the legislation's original risk-based approach by introducing an expansive, asymmetric regulatory framework for foundation models and general-purpose AI (GPAI).
The organization strongly argues against imposing asymmetric obligations that target a select few providers or models regardless of their actual risk or use. CCIA Europe points out that the AI market evolves rapidly, meaning any rules based on the current size of a company or model will likely become outdated within months or a few short years.
Furthermore, the letter highlights that smaller AI models and companies often produce the same or higher impact than larger ones. CCIA Europe concludes that risk depends entirely on how the technology is used rather than who develops it, noting a complete lack of evidence connecting AI risks to the size of the provider.
