The company aims to democratize access to regenerative medicine by bringing down the high costs associated with manufacturing human cells while significantly increasing the overall yield.
Currently, scientists create these therapeutic cells by hand, manually identifying and scraping away low-quality cells with a pipette tip. This tedious process results in a low yield of only 10% to 20% of cells passing the strict quality assurance tests required for human transplant, making groundbreaking treatments for conditions like macular degeneration inaccessible to most patients.
To solve this bottleneck, Cellino trains machine learning algorithms to evaluate cell quality based on morphology, size, density, and fluorescence-based surface markers. By fully automating these critical human steps, the company expects to push the viable cell yield from 20% up to at least 80% over the next three years.
