OpenAI reports that ChatGPT reaches 700 million weekly active users this week, reflecting a massive fourfold increase compared to the same time last year. This milestone encompasses all of its product tiers, including free, Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Team, and Edu versions, and coincides with users sending over three billion messages to the chatbot every single day.
The company experiences significant growth in its business sector, with paying enterprise and education users climbing to five million, up from three million just two months ago. However, ChatGPT still trails behind Google's competing AI offerings, as Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai recently reported that Google's AI Overviews serves approximately two billion monthly users and the Gemini app boasts over 450 million monthly active users.
This user surge accompanies a massive financial boost, as OpenAI secures $8.3 billion from a syndicate of top investors as part of a SoftBank-led $40 billion funding round. The company now generates $13 billion in annual recurring revenue, up from $10 billion in June, and projects it will surpass $20 billion by the end of the year despite requiring massive capital to sustain its global expansion at a $300 billion valuation.
