China transforms the Beijing Winter Olympics into a high-tech showcase by deploying advanced machinery and digital systems inside a strictly sealed pandemic bubble. Nearly 3,000 athletes and thousands of staff members experience unprecedented levels of automation and health tracking as the host country demonstrates its technological prowess on a global stage.
Robots dominate the Olympic Village by performing tasks that traditionally require human contact, such as delivering packages, cooking burgers, collecting garbage, and dispensing hand sanitizer. Roving machines even scan the air for Covid-19 particles and disinfect rooms, while 120 catering robots serve food around the clock in the media canteen to minimize infection risks.
Beyond robotics, the Games serve as the official rollout venue for China's digital currency, known as e-CNY, which functions as one of the only accepted payment methods in the Zhangjiakou Winter Olympic Village. These Olympic innovations reflect broader national trends, as major e-commerce giants like Alibaba and Meituan already plan to put thousands of robot couriers on regular city streets to cut costs long after the sporting events end.
