China's Chang'e 5 Mission Successfully Returns Lunar Samples to Earth

China's Chang'e 5 mission operates as the country's first successful lunar sample-return mission, gathering over 1.7 kilograms of moon rocks. The spacecraft launches from Earth, lands on the moon, and safely delivers the celestial materials back to Inner Mongolia.

China's Chang'e 5 mission serves as the fifth lunar exploration mission under the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program and marks the country's first successful lunar sample-return effort. Operated by the China National Space Administration (CNSA), this ambitious spacecraft launches aboard a Long March 5 rocket from the Wenchang launch site with a total mass of 8,200 kilograms.

The mission involves a complex sequence of orbital maneuvers, culminating in a precise landing in the Mons Rümker region of Oceanus Procellarum. After touching down on the lunar surface, the lander collects 1,731 grams of valuable moon rocks and soil before launching the samples back into lunar orbit via an ascent vehicle.

The collected materials successfully dock with the orbiter component before making the journey back to Earth. The return capsule ultimately lands safely in Inner Mongolia, completing a landmark achievement that provides scientists with fresh lunar samples for extensive geological study and analysis.
