SenseTime secures $620 million in new funding, pushing its total capital past $1.6 billion. The highly profitable image recognition start-up plans to use the funds for research, talent acquisition, and smart city development.

Chinese artificial intelligence company SenseTime raises $620 million in a new funding round led by prominent investors like Silver Lake, Tiger Global, and Qualcomm's venture capital arm. This recent cash injection brings the image recognition start-up's total capital to over $1.6 billion and pushes its valuation past $4.5 billion, securing its position as one of the world's most valuable AI companies.

The highly profitable firm experiences rapid growth, with business contract revenue increasing more than ten-fold so far this year. SenseTime develops advanced AI technologies that recognize faces, characters, and images, which authorities use for surveillance and criminal investigations, while major partners like China Mobile, Huawei, and Xiaomi apply the tools to smart city projects, autonomous vehicles, and retail.

SenseTime invests the new funds directly into research, development, and talent acquisition to combat the common industry shortage of skilled AI workers. The company also expands its strategic partnerships by collaborating with Alibaba and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park to establish an AI laboratory, while simultaneously creating educational textbooks to inspire the next generation of Chinese technology students.
