Chinese Q&A Giant Zhihu Secures $434 Million in Record Funding Round
Zhihu, China's top question and answer platform, raises $434 million in a Series F round led by Kuaishou with participation from Baidu and Tencent. The company plans to use the funds for technology and product development while expanding its expert-driven content.
Zhihu, the largest question and answer platform in China, raises $434 million in a Series F round led by video app Kuaishou. This marks the company's biggest funding round since its 2011 launch and stands as one of the largest investments in a Chinese internet culture company over the past two years. Baidu joins as a new participant, while existing investors Tencent and CapitalToday also contribute to the massive financial boost.
The company plans to use the new capital for technology and product development to keep pace with China's rapidly evolving media landscape. As part of the partnership, Baidu integrates 100 million Zhihu posts directly into its main app. Founder and CEO Victor Zhou notes that user expectations shift from simple entertainment to using the internet for solving real-life and work problems, moving the industry focus from mere traffic to a combination of traffic and quality.
Zhihu differentiates itself from competitors like Quora or ByteDance's Douyin by catering primarily to educated, high-income users and verified experts. The platform offers text-based questions, discussion forums, and a publishing platform, but restricts its live video feature, Zhihu Live, exclusively to professionals and organizations. Despite downplaying immediate IPO rumors, the company lays the groundwork for a potential public listing by hiring a chief financial officer and restructuring its operations last year.
