The system tackles the widespread problem of consumer confusion regarding recycling rules, achieving roughly 90% accuracy compared to the less-than-chance accuracy of human sorting. By correctly separating recyclables from landfill waste, the technology significantly reduces contamination and increases the amount of viable recycled material.
Beyond simple sorting, the AI-powered bins function as comprehensive data-gathering tools for waste management. The cloud-connected system generates high-quality data for waste audits, sends fullness alerts to janitorial staff, and features a large display for video advertising. As more units deploy, the TrashBot fleet learns and improves its sorting capabilities over time, while potentially offering valuable commerce insights based on the specific items disposed of in various locations.
The Colorado-based company raises $4.5 million in a Series A round led by Melco International Development Limited to scale its operations. CleanRobotics plans to manufacture hundreds of new units to add to its existing installations in high-traffic areas like airports and shopping malls. The funding supports international expansion into China, Australia, and Singapore, alongside new hires, improved manufacturing processes, and increased research and development efforts.
