Cognition Launches Devin, the First Fully Autonomous AI Software Engineer
AI startup Cognition unveils Devin, an autonomous agent that handles entire software development projects from start to finish rather than just suggesting code snippets.
AI startup Cognition officially launches Devin, a fully autonomous AI software engineer backed by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and various tech industry leaders. Unlike traditional coding assistants that merely suggest snippets, Devin takes on entire development projects from start to finish, including writing code, fixing bugs, and executing the final product.
Users interact with Devin through a chatbot-style interface by typing natural language prompts, and the AI independently plans and executes complex engineering tasks using its own shell, code editor, and browser within a sandboxed environment. The system makes thousands of decisions, tests its own work, and provides real-time progress reports so human supervisors can easily monitor the project.
Currently, Devin remains in a closed early access phase and is available only to a select few customers. This new paradigm hints at a future where AI workers handle complex computer tasks under human supervision, allowing engineering teams to delegate routine work and focus on more creative endeavors.
