Cognition, a new AI startup backed by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, launches Devin, the world's first fully autonomous AI software engineer. Unlike traditional coding assistants like GitHub Copilot that only suggest snippets, Devin manages entire development projects from start to finish. The AI independently writes code, fixes bugs, and executes final applications, demonstrating capabilities advanced enough to complete tasks on freelance platforms like Upwork.
Devin operates inside a sandboxed compute environment equipped with its own shell, code editor, and web browser. Users simply type a natural language prompt into the chatbot-style interface, and the AI formulates a step-by-step plan to tackle the problem. As it works, Devin makes thousands of complex decisions, tests its progress in real-time, and reports back to the human user.
This autonomous approach transforms the AI-assisted development space by providing a full-fledged AI worker rather than a basic copilot. Human engineers retain the ability to intervene through the chat interface if necessary, allowing teams to delegate routine projects to Devin and focus on creative tasks. Currently, access to this supervised AI paradigm remains limited to a select group of early customers.
