Consumer Spending on AI Mobile Apps Surges Over 4000%
User spending on AI-powered mobile apps skyrockets by over 4000% as developers flood app stores with chatbot applications. These native apps successfully monetize browser-based AI technology by charging for unlimited conversations.
A new report from analytics firm Apptopia reveals a massive surge in AI-powered mobile apps, with consumer spending jumping by an incredible 4184% year-over-year in March. This boom follows the public release of the ChatGPT API, prompting developers to launch 158 AI chatbot apps in the first quarter alone, marking a 1480% increase compared to last year.
Developers are successfully converting freely accessible browser-based AI technology into paid native mobile experiences. Apps like Nova AI, Genie AI, and Chat with Ask AI dominate the top charts by charging users to unlock unlimited or extended conversations with the chatbots. Genie AI exemplifies this trend by pulling in $1.5 million in revenue last month from over 100,000 paid subscribers.
To stand out in a crowded market of similarly named applications, creators are introducing unique features like specialized prompts and bots with distinct personalities. Platforms like Quora's Poe allow users to interact with various AI models, including ChatGPT and Claude, and even let users build custom bots for specific use cases. Overall, downloads for these AI apps reach nearly 20 million in March, showing no signs of slowing down.
