Coronavirus Spreads Rapidly Across Asia, Europe, and Middle East
The novel coronavirus expands its global footprint with major spikes in South Korea and Italy, while Iran reports its first fatalities and the WHO warns the window for containment is narrowing.
Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in mainland China increase by 397 to reach a total of 76,288, bringing the global count over 77,700. South Korea experiences a dramatic spike as infections surge past 430 after 220 new cases emerge in just 24 hours, with more than half linked to a single religious group in the southern part of the country.
The outbreak expands its footprint significantly in Europe and the Middle East. Italy sees its total jump to 62 confirmed cases due to a sudden rise in infections in the country's northern region. Meanwhile, Iran's health ministry confirms 28 cases, including five deaths, and reports the virus has spread to multiple cities, while neighboring Lebanon and Israel report their very first infections.
The World Health Organization's director general warns that the window of opportunity to contain the global outbreak is rapidly narrowing. The organization calls on nations worldwide to immediately prepare for potential community transmission as the virus continues to cross new borders and establish local infection clusters.
