Coronavirus Spreads Rapidly Across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East
The novel coronavirus continues its global expansion with significant new outbreaks in South Korea, Italy, and Iran. World Health Organization officials warn that the window to contain the virus is rapidly narrowing.
Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in mainland China increase by 397 to reach a total of 76,288, pushing the global count over 77,700. South Korea experiences a massive spike as cases surge past 430, with over 220 new infections reported in just 24 hours. More than half of South Korea's total cases are directly linked to a branch of a religious group located in the southern part of the country.
The virus continues its rapid spread outside of Asia as Italy reports a sharp rise in confirmed cases to 62, attributing the sudden spike to a growing cluster in the country's north. Meanwhile, the Middle East faces its own escalating crisis as Iran's health ministry confirms 28 cases, including five deaths, with the virus spreading to several cities. Lebanon and Israel officially report their first cases, bringing the total number of deaths outside mainland China to 17.
The World Health Organization's director general issues a stark warning, stating that the window of opportunity to contain the global outbreak is rapidly narrowing. The WHO calls on nations around the world to immediately prepare for potential community transmission of the virus.
