A faulty software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike causes the largest IT outage in history on July 19, 2024, bringing massive disruptions to the US aviation industry. The flawed update targets Windows 10 and newer systems, leaving Mac and Linux platforms completely unaffected while grounding thousands of flights across North America. This unprecedented event exposes the highly centralized nature of modern air travel and its heavy reliance on interconnected digital infrastructure.
The outage hits the three largest US airlines particularly hard, with Delta Air Lines suffering the most significant impact through approximately 7,000 flight cancellations. American Airlines and United Airlines also experience widespread cancellations and delays, but their IT teams manage to recover operations much faster than Delta. Data shows that North America bears the brunt of the global crisis, with the region recording tens of thousands of canceled flights during the month of the incident.
Interestingly, several major carriers manage to avoid the chaos entirely by relying on older technology. Southwest Airlines, JetBlue, and FedEx Express operate on legacy Windows systems that do not receive the problematic update, allowing their schedules to continue without interruption. Although CrowdStrike acts quickly to identify and roll back the faulty changes, the extensive financial and operational damage to the affected airlines persists long after the initial system crash.
