Cruise Accelerates Driverless Robotaxi Launch to Austin and Phoenix

GM's Cruise announces plans to launch fully driverless commercial robotaxi services in Austin and Phoenix before the end of 2022. This aggressive expansion moves the company's geographic scaling schedule forward by six months.

General Motors’ self-driving subsidiary Cruise expands its commercial robotaxi services to Austin and Phoenix within the next 90 days. CEO Kyle Vogt confirms that these operations launch without human safety operators behind the wheel from the very beginning. Initial rides are free, but the company plans to start charging passengers shortly after the debut.

In Phoenix, Cruise builds on an existing delivery partnership with Walmart and recently secures all necessary permits for ride-hailing and delivery operations. Austin presents a different challenge because the company currently lacks mapped streets, infrastructure, and operational experience in the Texas capital. However, Cruise relies on the advanced mapping and AI technology it develops in San Francisco to enter this new market quickly.

This rapid expansion pushes Cruise’s geographic scaling schedule forward by six months, a stark contrast to the 33 months it took to secure permits in California. The company now enters direct competition with Waymo in Phoenix and Argo AI in Austin. Vogt credits this swift progress to the credibility and trust Cruise builds through its ongoing San Francisco operations.
