Crypto Lender BlockFi Pauses Operations Amid Significant FTX Exposure
BlockFi pauses withdrawals and deposits as it navigates the fallout from the FTX collapse. The company confirms significant exposure to FTX and Alameda but denies rumors that the majority of its assets are stuck on the failed exchange.
BlockFi tells customers that it can no longer operate its business as usual following the collapse of crypto exchange FTX and its affiliates. As a result, the crypto lender pauses all withdrawals and asks customers not to submit any deposits while it navigates the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings.
The company addresses circulating rumors by confirming that it is false that a majority of its assets are custodied at FTX. However, BlockFi acknowledges that it holds significant exposure to the collapsed empire through outstanding obligations from Alameda, assets held on the FTX platform, and an undrawn credit line from FTX.
This operational freeze highlights the widespread contagion spreading through the crypto industry after FTX's sudden downfall. BlockFi states that pausing these platform activities is the most prudent move right now as it attempts to assess its financial options and protect remaining customer funds.
