Crypto Miners Turned AI Cloud Giants: Inside CoreWeave's $19 Billion Rise

CoreWeave, a cloud computing startup founded by former commodities traders, raises $1.1 billion at a $19 billion valuation by providing specialized GPU infrastructure for generative AI.

AI cloud computing startup CoreWeave raises a massive $1.1 billion in new funding, pushing its valuation to an astonishing $19 billion. The company focuses on a highly specialized cloud niche, building massive supercomputers specifically designed to train and run large generative AI models rather than hosting standard websites or data lakes.

The company's journey starts in 2017 when three commodities traders turn their New Jersey data center and Ethereum mining operation into a dedicated GPU cloud platform. As the generative AI boom explodes in late 2022, AI companies worldwide flock to CoreWeave to rent access to the highly sought-after computing power needed for intensive workloads.

CoreWeave experiences explosive growth over the past year, expanding its data center presence from three to 14 locations while building 14 more and quadrupling its workforce to over 550 employees. This latest funding round, led by Coatue with participation from Magnetar, Altimeter Capital, and Fidelity, brings the company's total capital raised to $3.5 billion.
