Cursor releases a new system called Automations to help software engineers manage the overwhelming complexity of agentic coding. Instead of manually launching and monitoring dozens of AI agents, engineers now use automatic triggers like new codebase additions, Slack messages, or timers to start processes. This approach shifts the workflow from a constant "prompt-and-monitor" dynamic to an automated conveyor belt where humans step in only when necessary.
The new framework builds on the foundation of Cursor's existing Bugbot feature, which automatically reviews new code for bugs. With Automations, the company expands this capability to handle more demanding tasks like in-depth security audits and thorough code reviews. Cursor states that it currently runs hundreds of these automations every hour, proving the system's ability to handle heavy workloads.
Beyond code review, the Automations system supports practical workflows like incident response and team communication. For example, a PagerDuty alert automatically triggers an agent that queries server logs through an MCP connection, while another automation posts weekly codebase summaries directly to Slack. By automating these routine but complex tasks, Cursor changes the types of work that become possible for modern engineering teams.
