D-Wave and Volkswagen partner at the WebSummit conference in Lisbon to manage a fleet of buses using D-Wave's quantum technology. The system uses quantum annealing to generate the most efficient routes, showing that quantum computing is slowly moving toward production use. Unlike other tech giants, D-Wave focuses solely on quantum annealing, which excels at solving complex optimization and sampling problems that stump classical computers.
Quantum annealing works by building a system that naturally optimizes itself to find the lowest energy state, which represents the solution to a problem. While companies like IBM and Rigetti focus on gate-model quantum computers, D-Wave takes a different path that currently allows for much larger systems. D-Wave's latest machine, the Advantage, features 5,000 qubits, whereas the leading gate-model computers only have just over 50 qubits.
D-Wave remains the only major player betting on this specific approach, but CEO Vern Brownell expresses strong confidence in the company's strategy. He notes that customers like Volkswagen compare D-Wave's technology against other quantum computers and find that D-Wave's capability is many orders of magnitude faster for most problems.
