Databricks Acquires MosaicML for $1.3 Billion to Expand AI Capabilities
Data management giant Databricks purchases generative AI startup MosaicML to help organizations build custom AI tools using their own proprietary data.
Databricks signs a definitive agreement to acquire generative AI startup MosaicML for $1.3 billion. The San Francisco-based MosaicML provides a platform that allows customers to build generative AI tools using their own proprietary data. This approach eliminates the need for companies to mix their private information with public data used by competitors like OpenAI.
Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi states that the combination of the two companies aims to democratize AI by giving organizations more control over how their data is utilized. Databricks, a heavily funded decacorn last valued at $38 billion, recently surpasses $1 billion in annual revenue. The company views this acquisition as a strategic step to capitalize on the rapidly exploding AI market.
This $1.3 billion deal marks one of the first major M&A transactions in the AI sector this year, a space that otherwise sees a massive flood of venture funding. The acquisition potentially sets the stage for a future public offering for Databricks as it broadens its portfolio of offerings. Other major AI funding rounds this year include massive investments in OpenAI, Adept AI, and Anthropic.
