Debian Approves Neutral AI Policy, Allowing Generative Tools in Development
Debian votes to allow developers to use generative AI tools in contributions to the Linux distribution's development, maintenance, and documentation. The new policy states that the project "neither endorses nor prohibits the use of generative AI tools" and treats AI-assisted work under the same standards as any other contribution. The decision follows consideration of several competing proposals, including some that would have banned AI-generated contributions outright.
The policy acknowledges that responsible AI use can improve developer productivity but emphasizes that generative AI is "neither exempt from nor subject to special rules beyond the standards already expected of Debian contributors." Contributors are not required to disclose when they use AI, but they remain fully responsible for anything they submit. All contributions, regardless of the tools used, must satisfy the same standards of quality, correctness, maintainability, and legal compliance.
The decision draws mixed reactions from the community. Some users and contributors express unhappiness with the policy, including one contributor who says he is quitting and is "no longer interested in anything coming from Debian." The backlash mirrors earlier criticism faced by Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, over its own AI stance. Meanwhile, Linux creator Linus Torvalds says Linux is "not one of those anti-AI projects."
