DeepMind Launches AlphaEarth Foundations to Revolutionize Global Mapping

DeepMind introduces AlphaEarth Foundations, a new AI model that acts as a virtual satellite to integrate massive amounts of Earth observation data. The tool creates a unified digital map of the planet's land and coastal waters to help researchers tackle environmental challenges.

DeepMind unveils AlphaEarth Foundations, a new artificial intelligence model that functions like a virtual satellite to map the Earth. By integrating massive amounts of satellite data into a single digital representation, or embedding, the model provides a comprehensive view of the planet's entire terrestrial land and coastal waters. This unified approach solves the challenge of connecting complex and disconnected datasets, allowing computer systems to easily process the information.

The technology equips scientists with a consistent picture of the planet's evolution to address critical issues like food security, deforestation, and water resources. To accelerate this research, DeepMind releases the annual embeddings as the Satellite Embedding dataset directly within Google Earth Engine. This release makes the powerful data accessible to a wider range of experts and organizations around the world.

Over the past year, more than 50 organizations test the dataset on real-world applications and report significant benefits. Partners use the AI tool to classify previously unmapped ecosystems, track agricultural changes, and vastly improve the speed and accuracy of their mapping efforts. The model even sees through persistent cloud cover in places like Ecuador and captures clear details in notoriously difficult areas like Antarctica.
