DeepMind Releases AI-Predicted Structures for All Known Proteins

DeepMind uses its AlphaFold AI to predict the shapes of hundreds of thousands of proteins and plans to release over 100 million more in the coming months. This massive database gives scientists instant access to structural data that previously took months to map in a lab.

DeepMind utilizes its AlphaFold artificial intelligence to predict the three-dimensional structures of nearly every protein in the human body. The company already generates structures for 350,000 proteins across 20 heavily studied organisms, including mice, fruit flies, and yeast. Over the next few months, DeepMind plans to predict and release structures for more than 100 million additional proteins, effectively covering all proteins known to science.

Understanding the specific shape of a protein reveals its biological function, which is essential for deciphering how diseases operate and for developing new treatments. Traditionally, scientists spend weeks or months mapping these complicated molecular knots in a laboratory, but AlphaFold accomplishes this task with atomic precision in just a day or two. This dramatic reduction in time makes the research process significantly faster and more efficient.

Instead of forcing researchers to run the complex software on their own machines, DeepMind offers a comprehensive and easily accessible database. Biologists simply download the structures they need directly from the database to accelerate their work on disease understanding, drug development, and even climate change solutions.
