DeepMind's AlphaStar AI Defeats Top StarCraft II Pros Without Dropping a Game
DeepMind creates a new StarCraft II artificial intelligence called AlphaStar that easily defeats professional players. The system learns advanced strategies by playing against itself for the equivalent of 200 in-game years.
DeepMind introduces AlphaStar, a new artificial intelligence system that defeats top StarCraft II professional players with a flawless 5-0 score. Unlike traditional computer opponents in the game that rely on basic, predictable programming, this advanced AI demonstrates true adaptability, improvisation, and imagination during matches.
The system first learns the fundamentals of the game by watching human replays to understand both micromanagement and macromanagement. After easily defeating the hardest built-in computer opponents 95 percent of the time, the AI progresses to the next phase of its training to challenge actual professional players.
To develop a robust strategy, the machine learning agent splits into hundreds of different versions that each focus on specific tactics like air superiority or rapid technological advancement. These diverse agents compete against each other for the equivalent of 200 in-game years, ultimately combining their collective knowledge into a single, highly skilled competitor.
