Defense Tech Firm Shield AI Reaches Unicorn Status With $210M Raise

Shield AI secures $210 million in Series D funding to expand its autonomous aircraft software and hardware offerings. The investment pushes the defense technology company's valuation past the billion-dollar mark.

Shield AI secures $210 million in a Series D equity round, pushing its valuation beyond the billion-dollar mark to achieve unicorn status. The San Diego-based defense technology company plans to secure an additional $90 million in debt and equity in the coming weeks, bringing the total round to $300 million. Disruptive leads the funding, with strong participation from Point72 Ventures and previous investors like Andreessen Horowitz.

The new capital empowers Shield AI and its recent acquisitions, Heron Systems and Martin UAV, to accelerate growth across defense and commercial sectors. CEO Ryan Tseng states the funding supports the company's vision of becoming a modern defense prime through a software-first approach. This strategy relies on a powerful artificial intelligence and autonomy backbone to differentiate its physical hardware, mirroring successful tactics in the consumer technology market.

Shield AI uses the capital to advance its core software product, Hivemind, which is a self-driving autonomy stack for military and commercial aircraft. The system employs state-of-the-art algorithms for planning and mapping, and utilizes reinforcement learning to execute winning tactics in GPS-degraded environments. Hivemind currently powers the company's Nova drones and integrates into the V-BAT unmanned aircraft systems to enable full edge-computing autonomy.
