Defense VC Razor's Edge Closes $340M Fund Amid Economic Uncertainty
Razor's Edge Ventures raises nearly $340 million for its third fund to invest in defense and security technologies. The firm highlights that national security tech serves as a resilient, countercyclical hedge against broader market volatility.
Razor's Edge Ventures closes its third startup investment fund at just under $340 million, easily surpassing its initial $250 million target. The defense-focused venture capital firm directs this new capital toward startups developing autonomous systems, space technologies, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and other aerospace and defense tools. Managing partner Mark Spoto emphasizes that these investment areas align directly with strategic national security priorities to help the U.S. maintain technological superiority.
The successful fundraising highlights a growing belief that national security technology provides a reliable shelter during turbulent economic times. Spoto points out that while broad financial markets face significant challenges, defense spending continues to grow both in the U.S. and internationally due to a complex global threat environment. Limited partners view the firm as a unique opportunity that does not correlate with traditional stock or commercial tech markets, effectively serving as a countercyclical hedge.
Traditional venture capitalists often avoid defense-oriented startups because of ethical concerns and the exceptionally long path to profitability, which usually involves at least 18 months of planning before winning a first government contract. Razor's Edge overcomes these hurdles through deep connections within the national security community and a two-pronged investment strategy that backs both early-stage companies and more established ventures. This specialized approach allows the firm to successfully guide startups through the difficult gap between the research phase and actual contract awards.
