Drone Swarm Paints Massive Community Mural in Italy
A team of four spray-painting drones works for 12 hours to create a giant collaborative mural in Italy. The project combines over 100 crowdsourced sketches into a single piece of flying street art.
A design firm in Italy orchestrates a team of four spray-painting drones to create a massive 46-foot by 39-foot mural. The Urban Flying Opera project collects around 1,200 sketches from the public through a mobile app and selects 100 of these illustrations to form the final design.
A central control computer translates the assembled line drawings into painting instructions and relays them to the drone swarm. The four drones, provided by Tsuru Robotics, operate simultaneously over a 12-hour period and use multiple position monitoring systems to avoid mid-air collisions while applying separate color layers.
While the artistic fidelity falls short of traditional hand-painted street art, this project demonstrates that drone-based painting is evolving into a viable creative method. The curator envisions this technology as a way to accelerate how people inscribe their stories onto the urban landscape and transform the city into an open canvas.
