Instead of creating content from scratch, the remaining contractors transition into "content curators" who review and approve the AI-generated material. Duolingo also integrates GPT-4 into its premium Duolingo Max tier to power conversational chatbots and provide personalized feedback. While the company disputes calling the departures "layoffs" and cites completed projects as a factor, it acknowledges to Bloomberg that operational improvements driven by AI play a significant role in the reduced need for human workers.
This move highlights a growing trend of companies replacing language-based roles with large language models, a shift that the World Economic Forum predicts will transform 23% of jobs within the next five years. Both affected contractors and Duolingo users express frustration over the job cuts, reflecting broader fears about AI displacing human workers.
