Electric Truck Maker Rivian Reaches $86 Billion Valuation in Historic IPO
Rivian starts trading on the Nasdaq after raising nearly $12 billion, giving the Normal-based EV startup a market value comparable to Ford and General Motors.
Electric vehicle startup Rivian begins trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol RIVN after completing one of the largest initial public offerings in history. The company prices its shares at $78, but the stock opens at $106 and closes at $100, pushing Rivian's market value to approximately $86 billion. This massive valuation puts the young automaker on par with established industry giants like Ford and General Motors.
Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe rings the opening bell from the company's Normal manufacturing plant, surrounded by hundreds of local employees. Scaringe highlights the company's rapid growth from a solo project 12 years ago to a workforce of 9,500 people, with over 3,400 located in Normal. He emphasizes the team's collaborative effort as they actively launch the R1T pickup, prepare to release the R1S SUV, and develop commercial vans.
The historic $11.9 billion raised from the IPO provides crucial capital for Rivian's expensive production ramp-up and future expansion plans. Despite having produced only a few hundred vehicles since mid-September, this enormous investor confidence reflects a broader market trend that heavily values electric vehicle technology as the future of transportation.
