Elon Musk Sues OpenAI Over Alleged Betrayal of Nonprofit Mission
Elon Musk files a lawsuit against OpenAI and its leaders, accusing them of abandoning the company's original nonprofit mission to benefit humanity in favor of maximizing profits for Microsoft.
Elon Musk sues OpenAI, co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, and affiliated entities over allegations that the ChatGPT maker breaches its original contractual agreements. The lawsuit claims the startup abandons its founding nonprofit mission of developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity, a principle Musk says Altman and Brockman used to convince him to help found and fund the organization in 2015.
The legal complaint, filed in a San Francisco court, asserts that OpenAI transforms into a closed-source, for-profit entity effectively acting as a subsidiary of Microsoft. After the tech giant invests roughly $13 billion into the startup, OpenAI shifts its focus to commercializing its AGI research rather than keeping its technology freely available to the public as originally promised.
Musk, who donates over $44 million to the nonprofit before leaving the board in 2018 and recently refuses a stake in the for-profit arm, operates his own rival AI chatbot called Grok. Altman publicly dismisses Musk's criticisms, stating he remains proud of OpenAI's positive contributions to the world despite the ongoing legal dispute and heightened corporate competition.
