Elon Musk's xAI Now Operates as SpaceX Subsidiary Focused on Grok
xAI, the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk, currently operates as a subsidiary of SpaceX and develops the Grok chatbot along with the X social network. The business also builds massive supercomputers and generates billions in revenue while focusing on virtual assistant technology.
xAI operates as an American artificial intelligence subsidiary of SpaceX, focusing on the development of advanced AI and social media technologies. The company features Elon Musk as its CEO and employs over 1,200 people who work out of its headquarters in Palo Alto, California.
The flagship product of xAI is Grok, a generative AI chatbot that competes in the rapidly growing virtual assistant market. In addition to Grok, the company oversees the X social network following its acquisition in March 2025 and manages the Colossus supercomputer alongside a new data center business.
Originally founded in 2023 as an independent corporation by Musk and a team of eleven researchers, xAI transitions into its current structure after SpaceX acquires it in February 2026. Despite reporting an operating loss of 6.4 billion dollars, the company achieves a strong revenue of 3.2 billion dollars as it shifts away from early humanoid robot concepts to focus entirely on software-based virtual assistants.
