Sensor Tower data indicates that Telegram accumulates 2.7 million total downloads in China, while Signal trails significantly with 458,000, showing that mainstream alternatives still struggle to compete with local platforms.
Accessing and using these Western messaging apps in China presents unique challenges due to the government's inconsistent censorship. While Apple's App Store still carries these apps, Android users must bypass the Great Firewall using a VPN to access Google Play, and even after installation, the apps face strict disruptions from Beijing's internet controls.
