Ethereum Completes Historic Merge to Proof-of-Stake, Slashing Energy Use

Ethereum successfully transitions from a proof-of-work to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, reducing its energy consumption by 99.95%. The infrastructure upgrade changes how the network is secured without altering everyday user transactions.

The Ethereum blockchain successfully completes "The Merge," officially transitioning from a power-hungry proof-of-work system to a highly efficient proof-of-stake mechanism. This long-anticipated upgrade slashes the network's overall energy consumption by a staggering 99.95%, marking a monumental shift in how the cryptocurrency operates.

Instead of relying on computationally intensive mining to secure the network and validate transactions, Ethereum now uses staked ETH and designated validators. This change seamlessly connects the main network with the proof-of-stake Beacon Chain that launched in late 2020, finalizing the transition after the network hits a specific difficulty threshold.

Despite this massive backend overhaul, everyday Ethereum users notice very few immediate changes to their experience because addresses, wallets, and transactions function exactly as they did before. However, developers plan to shift their focus toward rollup contracts to improve scalability and reduce transaction costs on the newly upgraded network.
