Ethereum Merge Slashes Global Electricity Demand by Eliminating Proof of Work
Ethereum transitions from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake, cutting its massive energy consumption by 99.95 percent. This shift removes an amount of electricity equal to Finland's entire usage from the global grid.
Grid managers currently struggle to satisfy growing global energy demand, making any reduction in electricity usage highly significant. Ethereum, the world's second-largest cryptocurrency platform, takes a massive step this week to address its environmental impact by shifting its underlying technology.
The platform transitions from a Proof of Work consensus mechanism to a Proof of Stake model. Proof of Work requires miners to expend tremendous energy competing to solve complex mathematical equations, while Proof of Stake replaces this race with a system where validators deposit cryptocurrency as collateral to verify transactions.
This update decreases Ethereum's overall energy consumption by 99.95 percent, wiping out nearly all of its estimated 80 terawatt-hours of annual electricity demand. This reduction equates to removing 0.3 percent of total global electric demand, effectively erasing a power draw equivalent to the entire country of Finland.
