Vitalik Buterin reports that the Ethereum Merge lowers global energy consumption by 0.2%, making it one of the largest decarbonization events in history. The network overhaul cuts Ethereum's energy use by 99.988% and carbon-dioxide emissions by 99.992%. According to the Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute, the blockchain now produces less CO2 than a few hundred American households generate in a year.
The transition replaces the energy-intensive proof-of-work system with a proof-of-stake mechanism, effectively removing crypto miners from the network. Previously, a single Ethereum transaction consumes as much electricity as an average U.S. household uses in almost a week. The new system operates without vast server farms running complex computations, solving a major environmental concern for the network.
ConsenSys founder Joseph Lubin praises the shift as likely the biggest decarbonization effort of any industry in history. While Ethereum moves away from power-hungry mining, Bitcoin continues to use the proof-of-work model and faces ongoing criticism from environmentalists and policymakers. Some Bitcoin advocates counter this criticism by arguing that bitcoin mining utilizes a significant mix of renewable energy sources.
