The European Union officially publishes its comprehensive AI Act in the Official Journal, establishing the world's first major horizontal legal framework for artificial intelligence. The regulation enters into force on August 1, 2024, with most enforcement rules taking effect two years later.
The European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act officially becomes law after its publication in the EU Official Journal on July 12, 2024. This landmark regulation establishes the first comprehensive horizontal legal framework for artificial intelligence across all 27 EU member states. The new law takes a risk-based approach to govern the entire lifecycle of various AI systems, spanning 180 recitals and 113 articles.
The EU AI Act enters into force across the bloc on August 1, 2024. However, the enforcement of the majority of its provisions does not commence until August 2, 2026. This delayed enforcement timeline gives businesses and developers a two-year window to adapt their operations and ensure full compliance with the new legal requirements.
This extensive regulation is the result of lengthy negotiations aimed at creating a harmonized set of rules for the development, market placement, and use of AI systems. By setting these standardized rules, the EU aims to protect citizens while fostering innovation, effectively setting a global benchmark for how governments oversee artificial intelligence technology.
