EU AI Act Officially Becomes Law, Setting Global Precedent
The European Union publishes its comprehensive AI Act in the Official Journal, establishing the world's first major horizontal legal framework for artificial intelligence. The regulation enters into force on August 1, 2024, with most enforcement rules taking effect two years later.
The European Union officially enacts the AI Act by publishing it in the Official Journal, marking a historic milestone as the first comprehensive horizontal legal framework for artificial intelligence. This landmark regulation establishes a harmonized set of rules that govern the development, market placement, and use of AI systems across all 27 EU member states.
The new law takes a risk-based approach to regulate the entire lifecycle of various AI systems. Spanning 180 recitals and 113 articles, the Act requires companies to assess and manage the risks associated with their technology, imposing stricter obligations on high-risk applications while maintaining lighter rules for lower-risk tools.
The regulation formally enters into force on August 1, 2024, but businesses have a transitional period before the majority of its provisions become enforceable on August 2, 2026. Organizations that fail to comply with these new rules face significant penalties, making it critical for companies to begin aligning their AI operations with the EU's strict requirements immediately.
