The European Union officially publishes the AI Act in the Official Journal, establishing a harmonized regulatory framework for artificial intelligence across the region. The groundbreaking legislation enters into force on August 1, 2024, and applies to providers and deployers of AI systems within the EU, as well as organizations outside the bloc that supply AI systems or whose AI outputs are used within EU borders.
Rather than taking effect all at once, the law relies on a staggered implementation schedule to give businesses time to adapt. The first major deadline arrives on February 2, 2025, when prohibited AI systems must be withdrawn from the market. The bulk of the rules, including strict requirements for high-risk AI systems, become applicable on August 2, 2026, followed by additional regulations for certain safety components and pre-existing general-purpose AI models on August 2, 2027.
While companies wait for these formal deadlines to arrive, the European Commission is actively pushing for early compliance through the newly launched AI Pact. The Commission is also conducting targeted consultations on AI use in specific sectors like financial services, ensuring that the detailed rules keep pace with rapidly evolving industry applications.
