EU AI Act Progresses Through Key Milestones Toward Full Implementation

The European Union officially publishes the AI Act in the Official Journal, marking a major milestone in the region's tech regulation journey. This publication follows the formal adoption by the European Council in May 2024 and unanimous endorsement by all 27 member states earlier in February. The landmark legislation establishes a comprehensive framework to govern artificial intelligence across the continent.
To support the rollout of this complex legislation, the European Commission launches the Artificial Intelligence Office in February 2024. This specialized body operates under the Directorate-General for Communication Networks, Content and Technology, focusing specifically on the implementation of the AI Act. It pays special attention to the regulation of general-purpose AI systems, which are capable of performing a wide variety of tasks.
