EU AI Act Reaches Publication Milestone as Implementation Begins
The European Union officially publishes the AI Act in the Official Journal, marking the culmination of a multi-year legislative process. A newly launched Artificial Intelligence Office now supports the rollout of these landmark artificial intelligence regulations.
The EU AI Act marks a major milestone as it officially appears in the Official Journal of the European Union in July 2024. This publication follows the formal adoption by the European Council in May 2024 and unanimous endorsement by all 27 member states earlier in February. The lengthy legislative journey spans back to 2022, when the Council of the EU adopted its general approach and the European Commission proposed harmonized liability rules for AI technologies.
To manage this sweeping regulation, the European Commission launches the European Artificial Intelligence Office in February 2024. This dedicated office operates under the Directorate-General for Communication Networks, Content and Technology, focusing heavily on the oversight of general-purpose AI models. The establishment of this office provides crucial administrative support to ensure the complex rules of the AI Act function properly across the continent.
The path to this point involves intense negotiations, including a provisional agreement reached in December 2023 and a strong parliamentary vote of 499 in favor in June 2023. During the earlier drafting stages in 2022, lawmakers submit thousands of amendments and debate heavily over how to properly regulate general-purpose AI systems. As the Act enters its implementation phase, organizations and developers closely watch the upcoming timeline to ensure their AI systems comply with the new legal framework.
