A dedicated European Artificial Intelligence Office launches within the European Commission to oversee the implementation of this new law. This office focuses specifically on general-purpose AI systems and operates under the Directorate-General for Communication Networks, Content and Technology to ensure consistent enforcement.
The journey to this point spans several years of intense legislative work, beginning with early commission proposals and thousands of parliamentary amendments in 2022. After achieving a provisional political agreement in late 2023 and securing unanimous endorsement from all 27 member states, the focus now shifts entirely to the upcoming implementation timeline.
