EU Designates ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox as "Very Large" Platforms Under DSA
The European Commission designates ChatGPT as a Very Large Online Search Engine under the EU's Digital Services Act, while Reddit and Roblox receive the status of Very Large Online Platforms. The classification applies to services with at least 45 million average monthly users in the EU, and it subjects the three companies to tougher oversight and accountability requirements.
Under the DSA, the platforms must address risks related to minors, user mental health, and the spread of illegal content. The rules also restrict platforms from targeting ads at minors or using sensitive personal data such as sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, or political beliefs for advertising purposes. In addition, the companies must provide more transparency about how their recommendation algorithms work.
ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox have until the end of December 2026 to comply with the regulations. EU executive vice-president for tech sovereignty Henna Virkkunen says the new designations hold the platforms to a higher standard of scrutiny in line with their large impact on European citizens and society.
