A new study from the University of Calgary reveals that children between the ages of two and five who spend more time looking at screens perform worse on developmental screening tests. Researchers find a clear correlation where higher screen use at 24 months leads to poorer test results at 36 months, and the same pattern repeats between 36 and 60 months of age.
The researchers point out that this negative effect is not bidirectional, meaning that while increased screen time causes lower developmental scores, children with lower scores do not necessarily consume more screen time. This specific finding strengthens the hypothesis that screen time directly inhibits development rather than an unknown third variable influencing both factors.
Lead author Sheri Madigan explains that the mechanism behind this delay is straightforward, as screens replace vital interactions with caregivers that foster cognitive and physical growth. When toddlers observe screens, they miss essential daily opportunities to practice and master interpersonal, motor, and communication skills through active play and conversation.
