The signatories argue that Apple's proposed system to detect child sexual abuse material fundamentally threatens user privacy across all of its products.
Apple's multi-pronged approach uses on-device processing to scan photos for CSAM before they upload to iCloud Photos and blurs sensitive images in the Messages app. However, the letter warns that because these checks happen directly on the user's device, they effectively bypass the protections of end-to-end encryption and create a dangerous backdoor.
While Apple insists these safety protocols do not compromise its hardware and software privacy features, prominent cryptography experts like Matthew Green strongly disagree. Alongside demanding a halt to the implementation, the letter asks Apple to issue a public statement reaffirming its commitment to end-to-end encryption and user privacy.
