Academics and civil discourse advocates are sounding the alarm over a massive surge in hate speech and disinformation on major social media platforms as the Israel-Hamas war escalates. These critics are giving social media companies a failing grade for their inability to control the spread of false narratives during the ongoing conflict.
A clear example of this failure occurs immediately after the Oct. 17 air strike on a hospital in Gaza, as social media explodes with unfounded accusations from Hamas supporters claiming Israel fires the missile and kills close to 500 people. When subsequent evidence suggests an errant Palestinian rocket causes the blast with a significantly lower death toll, the initial misinformation already causes widespread confusion.
UC Berkeley professor Hany Farid explains that the constant flood of fraudulent information makes it incredibly difficult for the public to trust authentic reporting when it finally emerges. He warns that this erosion of truth leaves everyday people completely unable to reason about what is actually happening in the world.
