The volume of stochastic violence on these fringe apps remains consistently high long before the Capitol riot. Ben Decker, CEO of the intelligence advisory firm Memetica, warns that the rise of these unmoderated platforms puts society just one incident away from another mass tragedy similar to the 2018 Tree of Life synagogue shooting. The perpetrator of that earlier attack notoriously used Gab to promote his racist views before taking eleven lives.
In response to the unchecked threats and dangerous coordination on these networks, major tech companies take swift action to limit their reach. Apple and Google remove Parler from their respective app stores, and Amazon Web Services cuts off the platform's web hosting completely. Amazon officials state that Parler violates its terms of service by failing to adequately monitor and remove death threats and other severe risks to public safety.
