Cybersecurity experts examine a version of the Iowa caucus reporting app and declare it rushed and fundamentally flawed from the start. The software, built by Shadow Inc., causes massive delays in reporting the state's election results due to underlying coding issues and poor design choices.
The app suffers from a critical data reporting flaw that prevents accurately recorded results from reaching the Iowa Democratic Party. Additionally, the user experience creates a major hurdle because it requires caucus chairs to download a separate testing application just to access the reporting tool.
Because of these overwhelming barriers, only about a quarter of precinct chairs successfully use the app to submit their data. The rest overwhelm understaffed phone hotlines with calls, forcing the party to abandon the digital system and manually count paper caucus math worksheets to verify the vote.
