Exxon Mobil enters the artificial intelligence power race by announcing plans to construct a 1.5-gigawatt natural gas power plant dedicated solely to data centers. This move highlights the massive electricity demands tech companies anticipate over the next decade, with estimates suggesting nearly half of new AI data centers face potential power shortages by 2027. Unlike its existing power facilities that solely support internal operations, this new project marks Exxon's first venture into supplying electricity to external customers.

To avoid the lengthy interconnection backlogs that plague many new energy projects, Exxon designs this facility to operate completely off the grid. The company describes the setup as "reliable, fully-islanded power" that requires no existing grid infrastructure. With a targeted completion date within the next five years, this natural gas plant promises a much faster deployment timeline than the nuclear power options that many tech firms are currently pursuing for their future energy needs.

A major component of Exxon's strategy involves capturing and storing over 90% of the carbon dioxide generated by the plant, a feat no commercial natural gas facility currently achieves. While federal tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act help offset the high costs of this carbon capture technology, Exxon faces fierce competition from rapidly deploying and increasingly affordable renewable energy projects backed by competitors like Google and Microsoft.
