Facebook Achieves Record Ad Revenue Despite Apple's Privacy Restrictions

Facebook generates $28 billion in ad revenue for the second quarter of 2021, doubling its profit from the previous year. The company warns that the full impact of Apple's App Tracking Transparency rules will likely hit harder in the upcoming quarter.

Facebook reports a massive $28 billion in ad revenue for the second quarter of 2021, marking a 56 percent increase from the previous year. The social network doubles its profits to $10.4 billion, demonstrating strong financial growth even as Apple enforces its strict App Tracking Transparency framework. This privacy feature requires developers to ask for explicit user permission before tracking their activity across other applications and websites.

Despite the current financial success, Facebook's chief financial officer warns that the company expects significant ad targeting headwinds in the third quarter due to these iOS changes. Data indicates that roughly 67 percent of iOS users decline app tracking requests, which causes advertiser spending on Apple's mobile platform to drop by about a third. Advertisers subsequently shift more of their budgets toward targeting Android users instead.

Before the release of iOS 14.5, Facebook runs an aggressive campaign claiming Apple hurts small businesses that rely on personalized ads. However, CEO Mark Zuckerberg later downplays the potential damage and suggests the privacy changes could actually benefit Facebook. He argues that if businesses can no longer track users effectively on iOS, they may choose to advertise and sell exclusively through Facebook's own platforms.
