Facebook Bans QAnon and Militarized Movement Ads Ahead of Election
Facebook prohibits advertising for QAnon and militarized social movements as part of its election security efforts. The platform also restricts the reach of QAnon group content in user News Feeds.
Facebook bans all advertisements that support the far-right group QAnon or any militarized social movements. This action represents the company's latest effort to crack down on extremism and misinformation on its platform ahead of the November election. The platform also bans ads that attempt to delegitimize the upcoming election results.
The social network takes additional steps to limit the spread of this conspiracy theory by pushing content from QAnon-associated groups further down in user News Feeds. This builds on the company's August removal of hundreds of QAnon-related groups, pages, and ads. Facebook targets the unfounded theory that claims a secret cabal runs the world.
Facebook addresses the group's deceptive recruitment tactics by redirecting users who search for related child safety hashtags to credible child safety resources. QAnon supporters increasingly use issues like child safety and hashtags like #savethechildren to attract new followers. The platform aims to cut off this specific avenue of radicalization and manipulation.
